Grandmother Shields Kids, Hit by Speeding Car
May 21, 2009
Santa Ana --- The California Highway Patrol received reports Thursday morning that a woman was injured after she shielded her two grandchildren from a speeding car.
The unidentified woman was reportedly walking her grandchildren, a 6-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl, to school at around 7:45 am when the accident happened.
Reports indicate that the three were walking on a crosswalk near Vanderlip Avenue with vehicles stopped on the left lane when the driver of a red speeding vehicle immediately applied breaks in an attempt to avoid the crossing pedestrians.
The grandmother crashed on the hood and was knocked to the street when she came in front of the vehicle to shield the kids from the imminent collision.
She was taken to the hospital for treatments of her bruises, scrapes, and possibly, a broken limb.
The children were not harmed though the girl was also struck on her left.
